The whirlwind of New York Fashion Week is over and all I can say is WOW! I literally busted my butt like 1 month prior to NYFW fashion week doing all the “pre-fashion week” work but I do have to say it was all SO worth it because I had the biggest blast ever!
This was not my first time in NY but this was definitely my first time not doing any “touristy” things while in NY. This was a little weird for me because I’m so used to watching a few broadway shows, however in my mind this trip was strictly for work and “doing my blogger thing”. As usual and as you can expect in NYC, I did bump into and rubbed shoulders with a few celebrities like Nicky Hilton, Patrick Starr, Mike Myers, the RHONY, RHOD, Lea Michelle, Camilla Belle, Danielle Bernstein, Michelle Salas, etc. but that’s totally normal in the 13 mile island of Manhattan. (Don’t get me wrong….I had may major fangirl moments every time!!!!)
NYFW had always been a dream of mine and this was my first time there (so I was a total NYFW newbie). I basically loved every second of it however, I did learn a few things along the way that hopefully will help any future NYFW newbies in the upcoming seasons.
Tips for future NYFW Newbies:
- Pack some comfortable shoes! I literally walked (and ran) hours upon hours in heels! I kept asking myself “why did you not pack some cute tennis shoes?!!!”. I was so desperate that I would of totally caved and bought the Louis Vuitton archlight sneakers that EVERYONE was wearing but thankfully for Hubby, they are sold out and nearly impossible to find at the moment! Next time I’m totally packing tennis shoes, flats, and cute booties!
- Pack some protein bars! You guys, I basically spend 5 days in NY like a little hungry child! I was hungry all the time and had ZERO time to eat! I made the mistake of scheduling back-to-back shows and presentations most of the days I was there so that basically meant I had no time to eat and was running and ubering from show to show. That’s a total “newbie” thing! Most NYFW veterans schedule about 2 shows a day max but I really wanted to see and experience that most I could while I was there since it was my first time! Next time I plan to take some time off each day to eat at a nice yummy restaurant!
- Pack an Umbrella and a Jacket! New York weather in Sept can be a little crazy! The first day I got there it hotter than Texas! No joke! I was sweating and my hair was sticking to my face, but no worries, I still managed to look “put together” during the shows (in case you were wondering). The next day it began to get cooler and then the last day we needed a light jacket! You gotta love that New York weather!
- Make New Friends! Make no mistake, there are a lot of divas in the fashion and fashion blogging industry but I was SO pleasantly surprised of all the new friends that I made. Gorgeous, successful, boss babes from different parts of the US (most of them from NY) that were SO kind and were all there for the same reasons that I was: because they love fashion, they love fashion week, and they wanna work!
- Don’t try to attend every show on the schedule! Literally my goal was to eat up Fashion Week and go to every single thing I could attend! BIG MISTAKE! As I mentioned above, that’s a total newbie mistake! I had some shows that I scheduled back to back and was literally biting my nails in my uber because I thought I was not gonna make it to the next show! Oh and here’s another thing! 99% of the shows I attended started 30 minutes after the time they had scheduled to start! The good thing is that the presentation itself only lasts about 15 minutes so that gives you the time to run out to the next show. However, that’s still not a good thing to do……You totally need to give yourself time to enjoy all the Streetstyle Fashion trends going on outside and inside the venues. Also, there are some AWESOME lounges sponsored by brands like TreSemme, Ebay, Papyrus, GlamSquad, etc. where you can pampered and fed before your next show! It’s all such an amazing experience!
- Train for NYFW! I thought it was so funny when a blogger friend said to me, “others train for marathons, I train for Fashion Week!” I thought she was so hilarious! But seriously it totally makes sense because you do run around SO much that I was so thankful for the time I had spent running and doing pilates prior to NYFW. So yes, be prepared and take your fit-bit to count all your steps!
- Be true to your Word! If a brand sends you an invite to their show/ presentation, feel important! The venues for these shows fit only about 150 – 300 people so if you happen to score an invite, feel very specia….but PLEASE attend the show! The job of the PR companies that represent these brands is to fill these runway shows with people who will in turn communicate to the rest of the world about the designers new collection. They do not like “no-shows” and the last thing that you want is to be black-listed from attending future fashion shows! Be true to your word and attend the shows you’ve RSVP’d for.
Last but not least, what trends did I see at NYFW? Ahhhh I’m so in love with all the styles I saw. From the beautiful cocktail dresses covered in pale pink feathers at the Pamella Roland show to colorful metallic overload and holographic sequins at Custo Barcelona……the one thing that I’ve taken over and over again is the fact that there are no rules in fashion! I keep saying over and over again and I truly believe it,……fashion is a true art form and I was so blessed to see all of these designers expressing their art and their style on the runway!
NYFW was a total answered prayer and I’m so thankful, and I’m so ready for the next one!!!! Who’s with me?
XOXO
