Guys let’s face it. Most of us can’t live without our phones. We use our smartphones for everything! We set our wake-up alarms on them. We use them to track our steps during the day. We use our phones to check up what the rest of the world is doing on social media. Most of us use our phones for work and then we get home and also watch our favorite series and unwind after a long day! Yes, 7 -in-10 drivers say that their smartphone has become essential for getting around (and yes, that would be me).
Recent statistics state that the number of adults who use social media has nearly tripled from 26% to 72%! I was surprised to find out the number of how many of us are entertained by keeping up with everyone’s life on social media! Yes it’s all fun and it’s part of our normal life these days, except the problem is that most people (83% of drivers to be precise) admit to using their smartphones while driving, or driving while distracted. That’s where it becomes a problem and a very serious one, I might add.
I mean I get it. Our days are so busy, going to work, taking care of the kids, going grocery shopping etc., so we all need a little outlet during the day to help us not feel so stressed. In my case, checking social media is so entertaining that I tend to check it a few times throughout the day and I feel that’s the same for most people. Just the fact that we can take a break from our daily “to-do” lists by checking social media, makes it fun. However, the problem is that we’re sometimes tempted to check our phones while we are driving or in the middle of traffic! Did you know that over a quarter of people do not even consider it a major problem?! Well guys, it is.
Would you agree with me that it can wait? Our text messages can wait. Our emails can wait. Selfies can wait. Social media can wait. Even our favorite streaming series can wait. It can all wait! Nothing is so important or entertaining that we would have to risk our own lives or the lives of the precious friends/ family members that travel with us daily. It is so sad that tens of thousands of people are injured and hundreds even lose their life every year due to smartphone distracted driving.
However, I do have some great news! There are 3 things you can do to speak up against distracted driving!
- First, September 19th is Pledge Day! You can join me and the thousands of many other pledgees who are speaking up against distracted driving by taking the “It Can Wait” Pledge. Just go to www.ItCanWait.com and take the pledge! In the past 75% of drivers who signed the pledge have kept their commitment of not using their phones while driving! Will you join us? It’s very simple and it can be done in a matter of seconds!
2) Next, you can also download the free AT&T DriveMode App in the Google Play store. With this App will automatically silence all your incoming texts for you while you’re driving. You can even have it send an automatic auto-reply message to whoever is trying to contact you.
3) Last but not least, speak up. If the driver you’re with happens to begin using their phone. I know it can seem a bit embarrassing to remind them to not use their phone while driving, but just think about it…….A little friendly reminder can save lives.
Guys, I’m sure you can agree with me that distracted driving is not ok. Let’s speak up. It Can Wait!

Yes, it most definitely can wait!! Distracted driving is not worth the risk, it’s so important that we stay focused on the road, for ourselves and for others!

So true, It’s important to stay focused while driving. I had a friend tell me that line it can wait while I got a text when driving! Love this cause

I totally agree with this! I’m trying to make it more of a habit to take some time away from my phone each day and go out and get some exercise in! If nothing else, I’m doing it for my mental health!

I 100% agree that all social media, texts, emails can wait! I have been in a bad habit of always picking up my phone when I am bored and I need to get out of that habit. I need to be better about putting my phone down and enjoying what’s around me. What a great post babe!

Ugh, I see SO many people on their phones while driving– although I’ve been known to check directions or switch podcasts on occasion. These stats don’t really surprise me! I think this is such a great initiative!

This is a great pledge to take. So many distractions can lead to life changing accidents. Thanks for sharing and promoting this!

I refuse to ever text and drive. It’s just not okay in my book – and I certainly believe it can wait, no matter the case. Love the message here.

Yes, it can wait!! I’m super firm on not being on my phone while driving, but lately I’ve been finding myself on my phone more with no real purpose! I want to redeem the time!

Love seeing this! Yes I will take the pledge. I see soooooo many influencers doing Instagram Stories while driving, and I’m all that can’t be safe is it??!? I live in NYC so I don’t drive very much but when I do it blows my mind what I see other drivers doing — their makeup at 75 on a highway, or reading a paper, or watching TV on their phones! Do we really care about each other so little? It’s insane.
Taylor Mobley says
YES. Nothing is so important it is worth risking your life over. Or risking other’s lives.

Love this pledge girl! It’s such a bad habit most people get into with texting/calling while driving bui it is so dangerous! Thank you for sharing 🙂

Great post! I have an iPhone so I have “Do not disturb while driving,” which comes on automatically in the car. It limits notifications and calls can only come through if my phone is connected to a car Bluetooth or a hands-free accessory. I greatly recommend it for everyone.

I am a firm believer that it literally can wait. But if it can’t find a safe place to pull over than proceed. I have apple car play, so if I receive any text messages it’ll read them and I can speak back to “text” back, all hands free. This is huge since I won’t even need to read anything it says who the text is from and exactly what it’s saying. And if all else fails, I can call the person.

I am a firm believer in non-distracted driving! Looking at a text message while driving is so not worth dying for!

This is such a great and important message! It truly CAN wait.

This is very timely post as we all are so much addicted to phones and sometimes I feel that it has become the necessity of life. But really we need to wean from it for some time to relax in our natural lifestyle.
